Onwards and Upwards for Vertik-AL and Gema UK

For this month’s Paint & Powder Edition we feature one of the UK’s leading powder coating businesses, Vertik-AL, a pioneer and innovator in the powder coating services space.

As part of their on-going investment strategy, Vertik-Al have recently finalised the latest step in their ongoing improvement programme, this included a state of the art Gema Magic Compact horizontal powder coating plant (pictured above). We discuss this investment with Vertik-Al’s Group Director, John Park-Davies, who took some time to talk about the investment along with Leon Hogg, Business Manager representing Gema UK.

John Park Davis provided some insight in to the services and continuous success of one of the UK’s heritage coating businesses that spans six decades, John explained “Vertik-Al has been at the forefront of powder coating for over 50 years and, as a consequence, offers market leading quality that meets both our customers’ needs and the requirements of the end client. This process requires continual improvement in technology, process, quality, efficiency and development of properties and functions of materials.  With this in mind, we have an investment strategy and programme of asset management that is borne out by this major investment.”

Leon Hogg, Gema UK discusses finalising plant design and specification “It was clear during the early evaluation stages that Vertik-Al were keen to invest in the very latest innovations that deliver quality and performance benefits to their customer base. With the high demand on quality, repeatability and quick production turnaround we quickly arrived at the Magic Compact fast colour change booth, a system that provided the perfect strategic fit when it comes to matching the level of flexibility and performance criteria set out by Vertik-Al’s team.” The Magic Compact fast colour change system features cutting edge technology from the industry leading Swiss supplier. Packed with innovations including the SIT OptiSpray (pictured right).

The introduction of the revolutionary OptiSpray pump technology delivers new levels of constant and repeatable high quality coating results over extended production periods. All powder types and qualities such as metallic and textured can be processed whilst maintaining the highest finish quality.

Due to Vertik-Al’s high production demands meticulous planning was required to minimise disruption and down time as well as mitigate risk, Leon Hogg explained the project delivery and installation aspects, “To position ourselves to provide the very best in end-to-end project delivery we have invested significantly within the Gema UK business. This continuous investment in our personnel and technology ensures that we deliver complex projects on time and mitigate risk for our customers.

Our highly experienced UK team consists of design and project, installation, commissioning and training engineers, so we have all bases covered. This end-to-end UK based engineering provision allows us to support projects such as Vertik-Al, providing our customers safety and security and ensuring that projects are delivered on time and on budget. In Vertik-Al’s case the complete line was installed within a 10 day period, with Vertik-Al producing the finest quality powder finished products to their customers.”

When it comes to aluminium extrusion coating Gema is without question the industry choice, the new generation of OptiStar and the proven DVC- and PCC- Technologies ensures perfect coating results by precisely controlling the spraying current, high voltage and powder output.

The automatic powder gun OptiGun (pictured above) is compact and easy to maintain. For color changes, the gun is quickly cleaned and ready to be used again. The easy-to-clean nozzles are removed within seconds and contain minimal wear parts.

John Park-Davis went on to discuss the procurement and selection process for the new powder coating booth, “Making the right decisions in terms of our capital investments has positioned us to day as a leading and successful part of the supply chain. At Vertik-Al we base all procurement of all capital equipment decisions by following a purchase process founded on three cornerstones. Will the investment benefit the customer? Will the investment benefit the operator? Will the investment benefit the shareholders?

This particular procurement process has been extremely rigorous. Over an 18-month period, we reviewed all the available options that met with the exacting business requirements. The top options were then reviewed via a matrix of possibilities based on specific criteria - quality, durability, longevity, ease of operation, options to develop the lines later in their operation, reference visits to see lines in operation, culture and values of the supplier and life-time cost in service and commercial evaluation. After comparing all of the options available it became clear that Gema ticked all the boxes and aligned not only with our technical requirements but also with Vertik-Al’s core company values.”

The new Gema line has been in production since the turn of the year, John concluded “The new Gema line is now in service and the improvements are clear. Powder usage has reduced which benefits everyone. Powder consumption not only has an impact on profitability but also, in real terms, has a significant environmental and carbon footprint impact. Equipment usability has improved immensely, this enables the operator to work more efficiently and enjoy their working environment. The quality of finish and application for matt, gloss and textured coatings is outstanding, this is a benefit to everyone in the end to end process. We have been so pleased with the results of the new line, have now ordered the second line from Gema, due for installation later in 2019.”
